Job security in the business world is extinct. Personnel placement experts say that less than four years at the same place of employment is the average now.Then the employee is laid off, downsized, fired, or otherwise disposed of. Ten different employers in a 40 year career? Is that stability and security? In times past, that would be called "job hopping." Would you be better off joining the circus and traveling the USA?
Layoffs now mean "good-bye for good" instead of "wait for a call from us."
"Downsizing" means your former paycheck now goes to the boss's lavish and undeserved (in most cases) benefits and incentives."
And where did the jobs go, anyway? Oh, yes. Now they've migrated to Third World countries, thanks to the unions.
Not only have blue collar manufacturing jobs left the USA in massive numbers, now professional and technical jobs are being exported, too. This is called "offshore outsourcing."
Software developers and call center customer service and telemarketing positions are moving out of the United States for the same reason--lower labor costs. White collar workers are no longer immune to this type of job loss.
These jobs are moving to the Philippines, China, Mexico and other places with well educated, English speaking workers. Technology makes it possible for these workers to communicate with clients and customers in the USA.
A call center owner--based in Tampa, Florida--has moved his call centers in the Southeastern states to India, since he can pay a qualified worker there $174 per month.
If all of this is not enough cause for concern, there are 120,000 skilled professional workers here in the United States on work visas from foreign countries.
Zenophobia and a union card cannot help you. No politician can put a stop to this, no matter what kind of rhetoric they use at election times. It is obvious that you must own and operate your own business to prosper in the 21st century.
Even if your job isn't exported to a foreign country, greedy, incompetent CEO's may destroy it, anyway. Look at the financial services sector of the economy!
The corporate scandals of the 21st century are absolutely disgusting and disheartening. The retirement funds of thousands of people were wiped out through the greed of corporate chiefs.
The contracts given to CEO's guaranteeing millions of dollars for them if the company goes down the tubes is just nauseating.
Merrill Lynch tanked recently. There were billions of dollars of losses. But the CEO lost only his job. He still is getting his $160 million severage package from his employment contract.
The former CEO of Citigroup had a similar experience. He was fired for losing billions, but still qualified for lavish perks for a number of years, including a luxurious limo and a chaufer to drive it.
Count on it. Merrill Lynch, Citigroup and many more institutions will not hesitate to get rid of thousands of employees. Loyalty--forget about it.
